You Can't Live With Integrity if You Don't Know What You Value
It is much easier to make the hard choices life presents us with if we have taken the time to identify our core values. This may seem obvious, but in my 20+ years as a psychotherapist I can tell you that half my work is helping people name and claim the values they truly want to have animate their life. Sometimes we have to be willing to define ourselves, even if it seems to be out of sync with our culture, families, friends, church or state.
You Can't Access Joy When You Are Stagnant or Don't Know What You Truly Desire
The unexamined life never asks itself:
- What am I really interested in?
- What do I really love to do/experience "just because I feel like it?"
You Can't Live Happily if You Can't Create Meaning
Believe it or not, happiness is not created or diminished simply by the life events we have experienced. It is the meaning we ascribe to these events that makes all the difference. What stories are you telling yourself? Do they make you out to be a victim or a person of endurance, perseverance, integrity and courage?
