It is very tempting to use a blog platform for personal rants. Fortunately, I had a great teacher who taught me the phrase: The solution to pollution is dilution. She advised that the world benefits most when people organize around the solutions to problems. To simply be disapproving, or in reaction to what does not work, is not sufficient or transformative. She encouraged people to do more of what works. She advised not giving your energy to what the problem is. So rather than only express my revulsion and dismay about what bothered me this week, I'll just say that there is a word I really miss seeing embodied lately. Here it is,
The definition of DIGNITY:
I learned what the word "twerking" meant this week. My life is not the better for it. I learned that a beautiful young woman manipulated the media and got more attention for herself by glorifying vulgarity. I saw more evidence that young women are being sold a model of female power that is debasing, demeaning and raunchy. The media sells us a version of humanity where being "famous for being famous" is rewarded more than being wise, helpful, intelligent, wholesome, kind or good. We are lining up to consume this version of ourselves. We then spread it by making it "the topic of the week".
My "drop in the ocean" of social pollution is to initiate a conversation around words we miss.
My word for the week is DIGNITY. What is your word? What would you like to see our society reflect more of?
